Small Manufacturing in the Shadow of America’s Industrial Legacy
In this lecture Smith Shop Co-founder Gabriel Craig will talk about starting a successful small craft manufacturing business. He will address the special opportunities for manufacturing and entrepreneurship and speak about his efforts to create community, city-wide craft infrastructure, economic development, and develop a 70,000 sq ft building to become the Center for Craft & Applied Arts.
Gabriel Craig is a metalsmith, writer, and craft activist. His work has been exhibited internationally and critical writing has appeared in prominent craft publications. In 2012 Craig co-founded Smith Shop, a dynamic community-centric metalworking studio in Detroit, with his wife and fellow metalsmith, Amy Weiks. Currently, Craig is working to establish the Center for Craft & Applied Arts, a center for craft manufacturing, education, and advocacy in Detroit.
