ABOUT ABOUT

Whether you’re getting grants, selling or performing art, self employed or have an LLC, you still have to file taxes. But what are the best filing options for your individual situation? With over 10 years experience working with artists and small organizations, Amy Smith will offer advice, handouts and help explain some of the more confusing tax subjects for artists (like what the IRS considers a hobby and what it considers a profession) what income must be claimed and what expenses are deductible. In addition, the mysteries of the City of Philadelphia Business Income and Receipts Tax and how it affects artists will be revealed.

Amy Smith is a founding Co-Director of Headlong Dance Theater and is a dance and theater artist. Her personal mission is to help other artists improve their financial literacy so they can have sustainable careers in the arts. To that end, she has been teaching financial literacy and doing tax preparation for dance, theater, and visual artists in Philadelphia for the past 10 years.

Christianne Kapps has worked for, with and around small businesses for 25 years. Christianne graduated with a BA in Art History from Tyler School of Art and an MFA from PennDesign. Having started small businesses of her own, and being a practicing artist, she can be the translator that artists need to navigate the business world. For the last eight years she has worked as a consultant, bookkeeper and tax preparer for small businesses of all sizes

Co-sponsored by The Center for Emerging Visual Artists. Media Sponsor: Flying Kite.
